Reparation – US Final Verdict

More than a century and a half after slavery was abolished, the federal government is finally ready to compensate the descendants of former slaves to atone for the country’s legacy of slavery. A California taskforce voted on Tuesday to limit the state’s reparations proposal for descendants of people enslaved in 19th century America. The members voted 5-4, rejecting an alternative that would have included all black citizens regardless if they had ancestors who were direct victims or slavery or nor not.
The decision was made after hours long debate about the issue to limit payouts for direct descendants of slavery victims. The motion to focus on the direct descendants argued that it would help ensure fair compensation without giving any one person an unfair advantage over others in receiving funds intended as healing measures.
