Peter Obi

As any Nigerian knows, the Nigerian electoral system is changing. The voters registration exercise has experienced an influx of youths from all over the country to register and be able to vote. Most people believe that Peter Obi is the reason for this because of the way his saving culture resonates with the youths. However, regardless of the reasons behind it, there is no denying that the recent surge in youth registration is a positive development. After all, it is only through participation in the democratic process that lasting change can be achieved. Hopefully, this trend will continue until every eligible Nigerian youth is registered and ready to have their say in how their country is run.

Videos of Peter Obi explaining to a university audience on why he was impeached has surfaced and trending on the internet. As the governor of Anambra State, he was impeached twice. Not because he was incompetent or extravagant. According to Dr Peter Obi, “I was removed from office twice and I can tell you why I was removed from office. When I was starting, Anambra State government house was bunt.” He continued; “I want to tell you how we were able to save money and how we were able to be the only government that left office and did not borrow money but instead saved. In 2004, the Anambra state government lodge and the government house was burnt, When I started in 2006 the budget to repair the government house was 298 million Naira and to repair the governors lodge was 481 million, these are the two reasons I was impeached and the third was SAVING MONEY WITHOUT PERMISSION. I repaired everything in the government house with 43.2 million and the governor’s lodge with 81.7 million”.

It seems though that the thank you card he got for such prudency was an impeachment. In a country where corruption is rampant, this is often seen as a threat to those in power. However, Obi is undeterred. He continues to fight for what he believes in, and he remains a powerful force in Nigerian politics. Only time will tell if he will be able to achieve his ultimate goal of becoming president.
