Aisha Buhari is known for being a strong and vocal advocate for women’s rights, and she has frequently used her position as first lady to speak out against the injustices facing women in her country. Recently, Aisha publicly scolded her husband, President Muhammadu Buhari, over his administration’s progressive discrimination against women. Aisha demanded that the regime sign a pro-women pact committing it to include more women in decision-making roles at the local, state, and national levels.
By criticizing President Buhari and demanding changes to the status quo, showing her bold stance for women to participate in the country’s governance at local, state and federal levels. She is demanding that APC govt sign pro-women pact ahead of the 2023 general elections.
She stated, “Permit me to voice out our concerns for the progressive decline in the involvement and participation of women in elective and appointive positions at all the three tiers of government. Our clamours and cries over the years have remained unattended to, especially, at the levels of legislative arm of government.
“For this reason, our movement has no option than to ask the party leadership to sign a pact with Nigerian women. We have no option than to sign a pact with Nigerian women that will spell out the good policies of the party towards women for documentation and follow up purposes.”
However, President Muhammadu Buhari stated at the State House, Abuja on Monday, while inaugurating the APC Women Presidential Campaign Committee (APCWPCC) that “As we prepare for the 2023 general election, my administration has continued to listen to the strong voices of our women for gender justice, social inclusion, and adequate participation in the affairs of their country and in accordance with global, regional, and national conventions, agreements, protocols, and policies to which Nigeria is a signatory.”
President Muhammadu Buhari appealed to his wife and other leading women in the APC to support Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu presidential bid and vice-presidential candidate, Senator Kashim Shettima. He urged these influential women to put their weight behind these candidates who he believes are best equipped to represent the ideals of the APC and its agenda.
